UN Sustainable Development Goals

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all. OEKO-TEX® supports the textile, leather and chemical industry in working towards these important targets.

Safety at workplace, good hygiene, medical requirements and social insurance are obligatory for the OEKO-TEX® STeP certification. Extensive product tests for harmful substances such as pesticides, PFASs or azo colorants ensure consumer safety for OEKO-TEX® labelled products.

We inform our customers, end consumers and other stakeholders about sustainability topics to enhance awareness. Important element of our quality assurance system is the training of auditors. OEKO-TEX® STeP obliges facility in conducting trainings and education of management and employees on social and environmental topics.

Gender equality is an important part of our OEKO-TEX® values: Our Code of Conduct is related to the International Bill of Human Rights and the ILO labour standards to ensure an active engagement of all employees.

OEKO-TEX® STeP and OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT supports facilities to monitor and optimize their chemical management and their wastewater quality – for more agile responses to new demands and the prevention of hazardous chemicals and disposal of untreated wastewater.

Fair wages, working hours and equal treatment of workers without any discrimination regarding race, origin, disability, religion, sexual orientation and ethnicity that`s what we stand for.

OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN guides consumers to responsible consumption by making supply chains transparent and traceable. The OEKO-TEX® STeP ensures the implementation of environmentally friendly production processes. OEKO-TEX® RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS supports companies to integrate and practice due diligence in their management systems.

OEKO-TEX® STeP provides a comprehensive analysis and assessment of all production processes with the aim to implement best practices, efficient processes and reduce the carbon footprint across the whole supply chain. OEKO-TEX® ORGANIC COTTON supports sustainability, soil health and regenerative farming as well as biodiversity.

Strong partnerships and trustworthy collaborations are key element of our business for achieving positive impact on responsible consumption and production. Therefore, we exchange with various international, multi-stakeholder initiatives, such as the UN, OECD, ISEAL, ZDHC and the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles.

We strive for safer workplaces, and responsible practices. Our OEKO-TEX® STeP certification enables a holistic consideration of manufacturing conditions from a sustainable point of view.

STeP refers to the International Labour Organization (ILO) core conventions, which cover topics such as the prevention of child labour and discrimination, grievance mechanisms and the regulation of wages as well as monitoring of working hours.

Various occupational health and safety measures such as safety in the workplace and the safety of buildings and production plants are also evaluated as part of the certification process. The STeP facilities are located in 56 countries, including Bangladesh, India and Turkey.

To us, quality means rigorous testing and standardised certification processes. Quality is a fundamental investment. OEKO-TEX® standards protect natural resources, workers and consumers. Around 1/3 of our annual budget go towards this crucial aspect.

To make sure that the samples tested during certification accurately represent the final product and comply with applicable standards, we do control testing. About 25% of STANDARD 100 and LEATHER STANDARD certificates and MADE IN GREEN labels, about 15% of ECO PASSPORT and 10 % of ORGANIC COTTON certificates are tested again - pulled from retail shelves, audits or downstream certifications.

Our quality assurance system

Audits, also called On-Site-Visits – are an important measure for reviewing processes and ways of working. On a triennial basis, each of our testing institutes undergoes an audit conducted by OEKO-TEX®.

Our STeP certified facilities receive a certification valid for 3 years. Depending on the facility certification level, audits are performed multiple times within the certification period. Also, each STeP facility needs to submit to a Compliance Audit 1,5 years after the certification has been issued.

The On-Site-Visits for companies having STANDARD 100 or LEATHER STANDARD certified articles are performed at least once every three years. The On-Site-Visits for companies having ORGANIC COTTON certified articles are performed every year.

The optional ECO PASSPORT On-Site-Visits are performed once every three years for all chemicals producers.

We offset our travel CO2 production

We aim to travel mainly by train. For longer distances, a plane sometimes is the only option. By offsetting our CO2 production, we provide a small part of protecting our planet in our daily business.
